Last night, I did portraits of Tamara on my parent’s roof in Soho.

I was limited in my lighting options because the high wind would blow any umbrellas or softboxes over or turn them on their stand, so I worked with2 speedlights on light stands.

1. Single speedlight, right above the camera.

2. 2 speedlights, both at a 45 degree angle, facing subject.

1. Previews from completed jobs. I intend to give people a glimpse into the jobs I have completed. If I used off camera lighting, I intend to give examples of the lighting set-up that I used, so that budding photographers can learn from my example.

2. Insights into the business end of photography. Whether it is stories about my dealings with clients, anecdotes about business, or useful services available, I will do my best to relay my experiences and knowledge so that others can learn from it.

3. Equipment reviews. Because I am a member of CPS (Canon professional services), I can try equipment out before I buy it. I would like to take advantage of that service and write equipment reviews of things that I use on loan from Canon.

Hello world.

This is the start of my photography blog. This is where I will write about what it means to be a freelance photographer- the ups and downs, strikes and gutters.

It’s difficult for me to write in the way that I used to. I’ve fallen out of the habit of writing. It’s been about 9 months since I’ve taken a class that has required writing from me, outside of the occasional gallery report or artist’s statement. This is where this blog comes in. While studying photography, and while practicing as a freelance photographer, I do not often get to flex my literary muscles. This blog is a way for me to get my mind back into writing shape.

I’m also going to keep this blog as a way of getting my clients to continually return to mikedote.com. After looking things over with google analytics, I’ve noticed that my website does not get many return visits. People come, look at the pictures, and then leave. That is why I am going to have my website redone in this upcoming month or so. I want to engage my visitors, and keep them coming back to my site for new and updated blog postings.

So, I begin this endeavor with a dual purpose in mind. I would like to generate more business while developing my ability to write. In this way, I think I will further develop my client base, while further developing myself.
